The Government of Kenya has contracted GEODEV (K) LTD to carry out an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) study of Funzi cariage way project of Milalani. Kenya Rural Roads Authority is the GoK’s implementing agency. The project commenced in 21STJuly ,2016 and was completed in 19TH March, 2018
The project aimed at the identification and analysis of the anticipated impacts of the proposed project in the physical, biological, social cultural and socio-economic environment, Review of the existing data on the proposed project including social and economic activities within the project study area and Production of environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA Report) for the project and seeking the necessary approval for issuance of a license by NEMA
The project had a few benefits Construction of the causeway will open up the area to investors leading to increased economic growth, accessibility of the Island will be a boost to tourism industry which is currently at a slow pace, there will be a boost to social services as doctors; teachers and officials will access the area easily, provision of employment opportunities to the locals during construction period will be a source of income, skill transfer to the local community during construction phase and value of land and property in the Island will increase.
Scope of the project
The project is Approximately 1.9 Km of the approach road traverses Munje Mangrove Forest and crosses through a section/channel off Indian Ocean landing at Funzi islands in Msambweni Constituency.
LOCATION OF THE PROJECT
The causeway and the approach road are located in Kwale County off Milalani-Munje road (UR 16B).
