The urban Resilience strategies for the five (5) cities in Kenya were prepared under the World Bank’s ‘Kenya Urban Support Program (KUSP)’, domiciled in the State Department of Housing and Urban Development as a pilot initiative. Key deliverables for the assignment were Urban resilience Strategies for the five Cities and a Guidance Note for future similar assignments in the region.
The strategies aim to develop a pathway that strengthens the capacity of individuals, communities, key city systems and city governments to cope, adapt, and continue in the event of chronic stresses and acute shocks. The resilience strategy reports present actions and mechanisms to address the challenges facing the five cities, review the Cities’ abilities to address those challenges, and identifies vital initiatives (ongoing and future) and suitable stakeholders (influence and power) to enhance the cities’ resilience.
The Strategies were developed for a period of 18 months, through extensive research that included key informant interviews, desktop review, resilience expert assessments and community level engagements as a means to diagnose and understand the resilience level of the cities. The development of the strategies was guided by procedural and methodological principles and approaches as guided by the City Resilience Framework developed by Arup supported by the Rockefeller Foundation.
